Lydia

A pale purple alien jaguar—though it had six legs instead of four—loped toward me, gnashing its fangs. The odd, almost happy gleam in its eyes belayed its aggressive posture, but hell no, I wasn’t hanging around to find out if it would kiss or bite me.

I raced around a sofa that must’ve been built for ginormous aliens, since the back came up to my mid-chest. I kept the sofa between me and the stalking predator.

“Lydia,” Gorok bellowed from the ductwork below. “I will save you!” He slammed around in the tiny tunnel, having a hard time moving quickly as he was so large. At this rate, the cat would be licking my bones clean before he got here.

Huffing, its bright green eyes trained on me, the cat slunk in front of the sofa, its long claws click-click-clicking on the wooden floor.

I clung to the back of the sofa, wishing I could find a decent place to hide.

Gorok poked his head through the hole and growled at the cat.

It whirled and bounded toward him, tiny whimpers erupting from its throat.

Very strange. If I didn’t know better… Wait.

Gorok leaped up through the hole and slashed his knife toward the cat.

“Hold on.” I leaped forward and onto the cat, bringing us both down to the floor with a crash. We rolled and came to a stop with me on the bottom, the big beast’s paws braced on either side of my head.

“Do not move,” Gorok said in a lethal tone, moving carefully toward us.

“Don’t hurt him,” I cried.

Gorok paused, a frown shifting the thick brow ridge on his forehead. “What?”

“Do you need assistance, Mistress Lydia?” T-Rex asked, zipping up from the ductwork and stopping close to my head.

“Nope. Handling it,” I said, my fingers sinking into the thick, purple fur on the great cat’s neck. “This little baby wants to play.”

“I do not believe one could call this creature little, Mistress,” T-Rex said.

“Don’t move, or it’ll rip your throat out,” Gorok said, pushing the droid to the side. “I’ll kill it.”

“And get blood all over the floor?” I said, shooting him a scowl.

The look on Gorok’s face was almost comical. As he came closer, the cat licked me from the top of my t-shirt all the way to my forehead. Slobbery kitty breath filled my sinuses; a complete joy for a woman who loved pets.

“Aren’t you a sweet baby,” I said, rubbing its tall, pointy ears with furry tufts on the top. A purr erupted from the beastie’s throat, and its eyelids slid to half-mast over its cute green eyes.

“It is not a baby, Mistress,” T-Rex said. “This is a fully grown catius lexius.”

“A what?” I asked, stroking its neck.

“A catrush,” Gorok said, his hand dropping to his side. “I’ve heard of these beasts. I don’t believe it’ll rip your throat out unless it’s softening you first with its saliva.”

The catrush continued to lick me, its rumbling purr echoing around us.

“I think this must be the penthouse pet,” I said, nudging the creature to the side so I could sit up.
